How to move your Chrome bookmarks to your phone and finally organise them
Years of saving bookmarks on your computer: the bank's website, tutorials, shops, recipes, articles to read “when I have time”. On your phone, where you spend most of the day, you don't use them because they're buried in a browser menu. Here's how to move them to your phone, in order.
Why bookmarks don't work on a phone
- In a mobile browser, bookmarks are hidden in a menu and awkward to browse.
- Syncing them means signing in with the same account in every browser.
- They only store links: the related PDF or video lives somewhere else.
- Over the years, folders pile up with no order and links that no longer work.
Step 1: export your bookmarks on the computer
Chrome
- Press Ctrl + Shift + O to open the Bookmark manager.
- Click ⋮ (top right) › Export bookmarks. A
.htmlfile is saved.
Edge, Firefox or Safari
They all have the option in their bookmark manager: in Edge, “Export favorites”; in Firefox, Library › Import and Backup › “Export Bookmarks to HTML”; in Safari, File › “Export Bookmarks”. They all produce the same kind of .html file.
Step 2: get it onto your phone
Send it however you like: by email, Drive or WhatsApp. The file just needs to reach your phone.
Step 3: import it into Linkalia
- In Linkalia, create a new collection and choose Import browser bookmarks.
- Pick the
.htmlfile. - Done: each bookmark folder becomes a category, with its links inside.
No Google account or any other account needed: the file is read on your phone and the bookmarks stay on your phone.
Step 4: use the chance to tidy up
- Move what's no longer useful to the trash (you can undo).
- Pin to the top the ones you use every day.
- Keep links together with their PDFs, videos and documents in the same collection.
- Use search: it finds by title, note or domain.
Free plan limit: private collections hold 200 items in total. If your file has more, Linkalia imports up to that number and tells you; with Pro there's no limit.
